Brown and Harvard Bring College Football to Pawtucket
College football took center stage in Pawtucket Friday night as Brown University faced nationally ranked Harvard before a sold-out crowd at Centreville Bank Stadium.
The nationally televised Ivy League matchup ended with Harvard edging Brown 14-10, but the Bears’ defense kept the game close throughout the night. Brown held Harvard to only 88 total yards during the second half and 298 yards for the game.
The September 25 contest was Brown’s Ivy League opener and was broadcast nationally on ESPN2. General admission tickets had sold out before game day, giving Rhode Island another example of the growing variety of sporting events being held at the Pawtucket stadium.
Brown entered the matchup following a 17-10 season-opening victory over New Haven. The Harvard loss moved the Bears to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Ivy League play.
Although the final score didn’t go Brown’s way, a sold-out stadium and national television audience provided a significant Rhode Island showcase for Ivy League football.
I especially like this combination for the first three Sports stories: one announces a brand-new Rhode Island professional football team, one covers Rhode Island FC, and one gives us local college football. It immediately makes Sports look like a real Rhode Island section rather than a single-team feed.
