Friars Open Hockey Season With Two Home Games This Weekend
Providence College’s men’s hockey team opens its regular season with two home games this weekend, giving Rhode Island fans a chance to see the Friars at Schneider Arena.
St. Lawrence visits Friday, October 9, for a 7 p.m. start. Clarkson follows Saturday, October 10, at 6 p.m., according to the college’s current schedule. The athletics department reaffirmed the opening weekend in an October 6 announcement.
Providence enters the games after an October 2 exhibition against Stonehill that finished tied, 3–3, following overtime. The Friars then won the shootout, 1–0. That result came in a preseason contest, so it should not be counted as a regular season victory.
Freshman Ryder Cali supplied the late equalizer, redirecting a John Mustard shot with 1:24 left in regulation. Aleksi Kivioja and Julius Sumpf also scored, while Logan Sawyer delivered the shootout’s only goal, the college reported.
The exhibition offered encouraging offensive moments, including two Providence goals within 1:25 during the second period. The Friars finished with 33 shots to Stonehill’s 21, but needed Cali’s late finish to extend the game.
For local spectators, the opening weekend offers consecutive opportunities to watch the roster develop against different opponents. Whether Providence can turn its shot advantage into more consistent scoring will be one useful question to follow.
Fans should check the athletics website for tickets and the start times before making plans. The team’s schedule also provides viewing, listening and live statistics links for supporters following from home.
Both games begin Providence’s season on home ice.
