Overnight Route 2 Closures Begin October 13 in Warwick
Drivers using Warwick’s Bald Hill Road should prepare for overnight detours beginning Tuesday, October 13, as crews place steel at the bridge carrying Interstate 295 over Route 2.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced the closures October 7. Route 2 will close between East Avenue and West Natick Road from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. on October 13, 14 and 15, and again October 18, 19 and 20. Local traffic will be allowed.
Northbound drivers will follow East Avenue to Greenwich Avenue, then West Natick Road to return to Route 2. Southbound traffic will use those streets in reverse order. Following the posted signs will be important around the Warwick Mall and Midland Commons shopping areas.
The work also closes the Route 2 entrance ramps to both directions of I-295. For northbound access, RIDOT directs motorists through East Avenue to I-95 North and Route 37 West. Drivers heading toward I-95 South will use West Natick Road, Greenwich Avenue and East Avenue.
A left lane on I-295 South, after Exit 1B, also will close during the operation.
The work belongs to a larger project addressing six bridges along this corridor. RIDOT’s earlier project advisory identifies replacement bridges over Bald Hill Road and West Natick Road, alongside work over the Pawtuxet River. The bridges date to the late 1960s and carry 48,000 vehicles daily.
The overall project is scheduled for completion in summer 2028. Travelers should check RIDOT’s latest advisory before leaving, because weather and construction conditions can change the schedule.
