Rhode Island FC Heads to Detroit With Playoff Qualification in Reach
Rhode Island FC heads to Michigan on Saturday, October 10, with a chance to secure a postseason appearance, provided its result and other Eastern Conference games break the right way.
The club’s October 8 preview lists a 7 p.m. kickoff against Detroit City FC at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck. Rhode Island enters the matchup sixth in the conference, with 11 wins, 10 losses and five draws overall.
A victory alone would not guarantee qualification. According to the club, Rhode Island would also need Indy Eleven to lose against Tampa Bay, or Miami FC to drop points against Loudoun United. That combination would secure RIFC’s third consecutive playoff berth.
Rhode Island arrives after a 3-1 victory over Brooklyn FC. The club’s match report credited Amos Shapiro-Thompson, Karifa Yao and Nick Scardina with the goals. Shapiro-Thompson opened the scoring with a turning shot from outside the box, Yao added a header, and Scardina finished a rebound in the second half. Scardina scored in minute 55. Yutaro Tsukada supplied the delivery for Yao’s goal, while Scardina’s finish followed a save from Stas Korzeniowski’s effort.
Detroit presents a defensive test. RIFC’s preview says the hosts have conceded 20 goals in 27 matches, while goalkeeper Carlos Herrera leads the league with 13 clean sheets.
The teams played to a scoreless draw in their April meeting at Centreville Bank Stadium. Saturday’s rematch therefore brings both a familiar opponent and postseason stakes.
The club lists NESN and ESPN Select television coverage, plus WPRO radio, for local supporters.
