Rhode Island’s Troll Trail Turns Recycled Wood Into Outdoor Adventure
Giant wooden trolls are giving Rhode Islanders a reason to explore parks and waterfront paths, combining public art with a message about sustainability.
The Rhode Island Troll Trail features sculptures by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who transforms discarded wood into imaginative figures. The installations invite visitors to spend time outdoors while considering how materials can be reused.
In East Providence, Mrs. Skipper overlooks the waterfront at Kettle Point, near the East Bay Bike Path. Charlestown’s Ninigret Park is home to Erik Rock and Greta Granite, offering two discoveries within the same park.
Young Boulder sits near Browning Mill Pond in Arcadia Management Area, while Iver Mudslider awaits visitors at Ryan Park in North Kingstown.
The sculptures are free to visit, and travelers can explore them individually or plan a driving itinerary connecting several locations. Each stop offers opportunities to walk, take photographs and discover a Rhode Island landscape.
The South County Tourism Council provides a downloadable brochure mapping the trail. Visitors should review directions and parking information before setting out, as the sculptures occupy separate sites.
Travelers are asked to respect the artwork and avoid climbing the trolls.
A picnic or nearby restaurant stop can round out the day’s adventure.
